How do you write?

How do you write?

This is a question I get asked quite a lot the other question being 'How do you come up with your ideas?'

Very often writing just involves getting your butt down on the chair and getting on with it. It is hard and it is painful and often you feel like you are swimming against the tide but if you want to be a writer you do it. I started writing many years ago using pen and paper, it took me hours to get the words down but I forced myself to do so many a day. Typing up the story was my first set of edits making the typed up version the second draft - further edits and more work followed before it was even suitable to be given to my then editor. This is how things went for a very long time until I started to write directly upon the computer and then my trusted tablet which has travelled all over with me recently.

From time to time I'll switch back to writing with pen and paper and so my writing room is piled up with fresh and half filled notepads, pens are spread all over the place meaning I am never far from a writing implement. Yes it does take a while to type up the words I've written which means I probably write far slower but somehow I feel more connected to the story. Be it that I can remember where I was when I wrote that sentence or knowing why my handwriting  is more of a scrawl at points there is something real about working in ink.

I now know I will always switch between writing straight onto the computer and writing in pen and I gladly accept the fact that I'll be not working efficiently however working inefficiently is far more preferable than not working at all.

So how about you - how do you write?

A weekly update and a release

Another week down! Writing has been a bit more awkward this past week due to extra hours at the other job but words have been done so I'm feeling a little more happy than if I'd not managed to do any. I've picked up some more pieces of technology which allows me to get words done on the move. This has allowed me to get writing wherever I am which has vastly increased what I can do, I'll keep you all informed how that goes!

However I wanted to talk about a release that occurred relatively recently but one I've not got around to announcing.

For many years I've been a fan of Constable and Robinson’s Mammoth Book series so when Barbara Cardy's latest submission call went up for uniform erotica I couldn't hold the ideas back. A Right Royal Spanking is set in the world of Captain Barnabus but is focused on different characters.

I was over joyed when it was accepted and now with the books release you can read it in both ebook and print.

Here's the blurb:

Coming back from his latest mission Captain Mortimer Montague faces the consequences of his actions, but his attention is definitely elsewhere.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00T6L14C2

It's filled with great stories all with the uniform as the main theme.

You can find it here:

Wait....what?

It's 2015 and I'm sure I say this at the start of every year but where did last year go? I think I blinked and missed quite a bit of it!

So as usual here is my yearly recap (I may have to start doing one in the middle of the year also to make sure I realise so much time has gone!).

2014 saw many different projects coming to the end and some exciting ones getting started. It was the year my anthologies started to hit the shelves and if anyone had told me that by the end of 2014 I'd have had two anthologies that I'd edited published and three more in the pipeline I'd have never believed it!

The year started with the publication of Three's Company an anthology about threesomes (or sometimes more) it contains my story Taking a Chance. Then it was closely followed by my first anthology Coming Together: Through the Storm, all proceeds of that anthology goes to Mercy Corps and was created to raise money for the typhoon stricken Philippines. After that came Valves & Vixens the first in my series of Steampunk Anthologies. Inspired by one of the stories submitted in Coming Together: Through the Storm the anthology brings together steampunk and erotica what could be better?

As well as those there was: XOXO (containing SO Oft Beguiled), Be My Valentine-XOXO (the print release), Girl Play 2, More Smut for Chocoholics (containing The Competition), Valves & Vixens (my second anthology of the year), The Big Book of Submission: 69 Kinky Tales (containing Lost in the Feeling), The House of Erotica (containing The First Flight), Perfect Proportions (containing Perfect Proportions).

This year also brought new covers for: Wandering Lust, Sun Sea & Seduction and Reigning in Sarah.

Phew! So what does 2015 bring?

Well Cosmic Encounters my science fiction anthology will be out soon, Valves & Vixens 2 is currently in the editing process. I've got a story in an anthology coming out in March time and there will be an announcement about further anthology calls coming soon so watch this space!

Valves & Vixens Inspiration & a giveaway!

Well as most readers of this blog will know whenever a new book is published that I'm a part of I try and run a series of inspiration posts by the authors for the story behind the story. I don't know about anyone else but I love getting to know why the story was written the way it was. It's also a great way of getting to know the author behind the work too.

So today is the first of the Valves & Vixens inspiration posts. Today I have the great joy of welcoming Crysta K Coburn to my blog. Her story is the second in the anthology and in terms of heat levels the sweetest. Now I love steampunk but I adore it when stories aren't set in the 'traditional' places. The Waiting Future is just one of these stories but I will let Crysta talk about it herself in far better words than I could ever do!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LAD2QKS

The Waiting Future
By Crysta K Coburn

Blurb: Meiji era Japan (late 1868 to mid-1912 by Western reckoning) was a time of rapid modernisation that many people resisted. The future had arrived, however, and waited for any brave enough to seek it

I can't say where it started, but I have been in love with Japan for most of my life. (I earned a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies with an emphasis on Japan, minored in Japanese, and spent the summer of 2003 in a Japanese study abroad program in Shiga Prefecture.) It's a country with a long, twisting history of pride, battle, triumph, defeat, always trying to stay ahead and on top of the game while simultaneously pursuing paths of peace, beauty, and elevating nearly every aspect of life to a form of art. Japan is dazzling!

The joy I find in steampunk has come to me much more recently. I've always loved fantasy and history both, and steampunk is a beautifully creative marriage of the two. What has sort of annoyed me about it, though, is that so much steampunk revolves around the same era and location in history: Victorian England. (One could even narrow it further to the city of London.) But the world is vast with thousands of cultures and ages of history, and the end of the 1800s in Japan, the Meiji era, is practically real-life, historical steampunk. Men in kimono with guns and top hats; women in dresses and corsets that they don't totally understand and are wearing improperly (Russia is also guilty of this). Why was no one touching this?

I am not a seamstress, though I have made a few costumes in my time. My art is writing, so naturally, writing is how I chose to contribute to the genre of steampunk which I enjoy so much. When I sat down to pen my own steampunk story, I didn't really know anything about Victorian England or London, then or now. Aside from a surprisingly lovely four hour layover in Heathrow, I've never been to England. So I went with what I do know, and that is Japan.

Having an unusual setting isn't enough to carry a story, though. I wanted unique characters. I chose for my heroine to have albinism for a few different reasons. First, you don't see many main characters with albinism, and I think that should change. Second, pale skin is prized in Japan, sometimes to the point of illness due to vitamin deficiency. Third, this is a time when Japan was essentially emulating Western Europe, specifically England. A person with white hair and blue eyes is going to be extra alluring to someone who is already enamored with Western people and culture. Albinism doesn't define Yuki, and it isn't the sole reason Fukui is attracted to her, but there is definitely an influence there on both of them, and I think it's an interesting element to throw into the mix.

I really enjoyed the time I spent immersed in old world Japan, and I hope to revisit it soon.

Blink and you'll miss it

So things became a little complicated after my emergency hospital visit and even though I've been home things had to more or less come to a total halt. Which means I've more or less blinked and missed all of February!

However I have been reading through all the great submissions for my steampunk anthology Valves & Vixens and I've been getting really excited about this anthology. If you haven't yet submitted to it yet don't worry you still have a few days left my submission guidelines can be found here: http://nicolegestalt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/submissions-wanted-corsets-clockwork.html

Now in other news this month has been the month for me to finally get my hands on print copies of some of the books I've been a part of over the past few months.

First of all the most recent book Be My Valentine - XOXO (published by House of Erotica) is now in print.

Although it is still technically winter Winter Warmers (published by House of Erotica) is the perfect collection to keep you all warm on the dark nights. It contains my story A Meeting of Seasons when Autumn meets Winter and things get more than a little heated.
Buy it from Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1783333952

Finally Coming Together: Through the Storm is now out and is also in print published by Coming Together. This book marked the first time I have publicly edited stories as a whole and I loved reading all the submissions. All the proceeds of the book go toward Mercy Corps and the great work they do.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1494982056

The book has some great stories in it by some amazing authors and I was so honoured to work with them.

Coming Together: Through the Storm Inspiration - Naomi Bellina

Well today I have Naomi Bellina over to talk about her inspiration for her story Take Me Like A Hurricane which can be found in the charity anthology Coming Together: Through The Storm.

So here's Naomi:

I was inspired to write about the aftermath of a hurricane in Florida because after living through several, I can tell you, afterwards is the worse part. During the storm, it's awesome to see Mother Nature going all out and showing her power. After, it's hot, messy and miserable. There's no electric so no air conditioning, people run their noisy generators nonstop so you can't sleep, nothing is open, you have no hot water for a shower, it's awful. What would happen if there was only one hotel room with AC left? I know I would turn into a she-bitch to get it! I had a great time writing this story and putting my hero and heroine through a little hell. When they finally get to taste heaven, it's that much sweeter!

All about Naomi:

Naomi lives in beautiful sunny Florida with the love of her life and a magical calico cat. She writes for various fiction and non-fiction markets, but finds she is drawn to romance because her characters insist on canoodling and falling madly in love. So she lets them. Occasionally, however, they go to dark and strange places. She lets them do this also. Most of her stories will surprise readers with unexpected twists and turns, because isn't that what makes life exciting?

Her interests include dancing, hula-hooping, drumming, and creating healthy meals. She takes the opportunity to play, have fun, and indulge in the pursuit of passion whenever possible. She hopes you enjoy her stories and would love to hear from you at naomibellina(at)live(dot)com. Visit her website at http://www.naomibellina.com/ and chat on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NaomiBellinaAuthor

Thanks Naomi for coming over!

Please don't forget that you can buy Coming Together: Through the Storm from Amazon, All Romance Ebooks and many other places. All links can be found here: http://www.eroticanthology.com/throughthestorm.htm
Competition/Give Away
If you happen to be so kind to buy the book (you should, it's really good if I do say so myself!) and then review it send me the link to my email address reliefanthology '@' gmail 'dot' com I will put you into a prize draw to win any one of my ebooks/books (you get to pick which). Which means not only do you get to donate to charity (all proceeds of Coming Together: Through the Storm go to Mercy Corps) you may well be getting two books for the price of one - and that can't be bad at all.

New Year's Guidelines 2014

Well I did this last year (need to get used to saying that now!) and enjoyed it enough to do it again this year.

If anyone wants to read last years post you can find it here: http://nicolegestalt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/new-years-guidelines.html

Writing Guidelines

  • Continue to work on writing at least 1000 words a day but don't be too hard on myself for not hitting goals.
  • Work with more anthologies - I'm just finishing up Coming Together: Through the Storm and have loved working with so many awesome authors.
  • Hit more deadlines - I need to get work done before the last night of the deadline!
  • Blog at least once a week - my net is all over the place but it shouldn't be too hard to hit that one.
  • Write and enjoy it!
  • Work on my networking and marketing

 General Guidelines
  • Eat regular meals.
  • Try and get more paperwork organised.
  •  Become far more active
  • Do more artwork.
  • Have afternoon tea at least once a month!
  • Remember to focus on the small good things rather then worry about the next thing that might happen.
  • Remember to take time out and relax from time to time
  • Spend time with the other half and give ourselves a break from time to time
  • Make memories!
Some (most) are the same as last year but they helped me focus on what was important last year.

So what does 2014 hold?

Coming soon I have Coming Together: Through the Storm being released. This is the first multi-author anthology that I've edited and I'm very excited to be taking part in such a great cause.

http://www.eroticanthology.com/throughthestorm.htm

At the end of January my second all female anthology will be out! I am very much looking forward to Sun, Sea And Seduction coming out as I have a lot of great memories linked with the writing of all the stories in the book. More information on this will be coming shortly so watch this space!

Finally if you are looking for an anthology to submit to February 28th sees the deadline of my call of submissions for my steampunk anthology Valves & Vixens. Click on the picture for the guidelines.

http://nicolegestalt.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/submissions-wanted-corsets-clockwork.html

And I think for the moment at least that is enough for the first post of 2014 - hope everyone has a good one.

Submissions wanted: Corsets & Clockwork - Steampunk erotica - now renamed: Valves & Vixens

I love Steampunk, and decided it was about time to put an anthology of Steampunk Erotica together. Inspired by my love of science and technology I didn't just want to write the anthology on my own I am looking for submissions!

All the information can be found below the deadline is February 28th and please pass this on to whomever you think would be interested.

Editor: Nicole Gestalt
Publisher:
House of Erotica
Deadline: February 28
th 2014 (Early Submissions are preferred.)

Word Count: 5k - 15k
Theme: Steampunk
Genre: Steampunk but any sub-genre is welcome be it Science Fiction, BDSM, Fantasy, historical, action, comedy, crime or any other!

Pairings: Any
Heat: Any level from romance to burning the pages of the book!
Payment: Royalties will be split 40% of the net profits with contributing authors, exact values will be given once we know how many stories will be in the final anthology.
Rights: Six Years
Submission limit: Authors may submit up to two stories.

Editor/ Author Nicole Gestalt is looking for stories set in a might-have-been Victorian setting filled with clockwork machines and airships. Think Jules Verne or League of Extraordinary Gentleman, think Sherlock Holmes with clockwork machines and the film Wild, Wild West.

The stories do not have to be focused in the Victorian era they could be modern day stories but still with the Victorian clockwork style. They could even be off world – think spaceships powered by nothing but steam, or mighty metal boats propelled by sails powered by the rays of the sun. Be as inventive as you can but please don't forget the story line and the relationships! Since this is an erotic anthology there should be on the page sex scenes however don't forget the interaction between the characters and the relationship they have. The stories should either end with a Happy-For-Now or a Happy-Ever-After it would have to be a amazingly good story for me to select it if it didn't (but I am well prepared to have my opinion changed on that).

Nicole will be looking for stories that stand out so please don't just set your stories in London, they can be set anywhere in the world – or even off world. Don't be afraid to experiment

The No-No's: No scat, bestiality, under age sex, golden showers, rape or forced sex or incest of any kind and necrophilia (that does not include intelligent undead such as Vampires). If in doubt please ask

Format of submission: Please send the submissions double spaced in Times New Roman, 12 point black font. Indent the first line of each paragraph half an inch and double space (using normal double spacing please do not add an extra line between the paragraphs). Double quotation marks! Please submit your final, complete and totally edited version of the story. File format: .doc or .rtf. Since this is a British publisher UK spelling and grammar is greatly preferred.

In your document at the top left of the page please include you legal name, mailing address and a fifty words or less author bio written in the third person. If you are using a pen-name please provide both and make it clear which one you wish to use.

Please email your submissions to: gestaltanthologies@gmail.com

Authors must own their rights to the stories and not have had them published anywhere else. Please note the publisher has final approval over the stories included in the manuscript.

Weekly Round Up

Well this is the second week in a row I'm actually doing a round-up but I'm not yet ready to call this a thing yet!

This week has been very much of a blur of things. On Tuesday I sat down with my writing head on and actually managed to write over 5000 words during the day which is the best writing day I've had for a long time. I even managed to finish a submission and get well into half way of my pirate story, which is awesome because I'm really having far more fun writing it then I was expecting to.

So the week has ended up with me submitting one story, finishing off one more and beginning Chapter 5 of a longer piece. Yet that isn't all! This week I was also asked to edit an anthology for Coming Together. They are a charity that creates erotic anthologies for different causes, if you look down the left hand side of this site you will see a few Coming Together titles (With a Twist, Alfresco, With Pride and Under Fire) all of these I have stories within. None of the contributors get any payment apart from a copy of the final pdf and the money of the sales go to the charity's picked.

The anthology I'll be editing will be going to help Mercy Corps especially with the most recent natural disaster in the Phillipines.

All submission guidelines can be found by clicking the picture on the left that says Coming Together: Through the Storm. This anthology will have a quick turn around due to the fact that the disaster has already happened and aid is needed now. It reminds me of Coming Together: Under Fire which contains my story Melting Point, the stories in that anthology were written in even less time and all proceeds of that anthology went and still go to helping victims of the California Wildfires.

Finally the last bit of the news from this week is the latest House of Erotica collections is now out and available to buy. This one is called House of Erotica Winter Warmers Collections and contains my story A Meeting of Seasons which is a male/female fantasy story based around the seasons (as the name may suggest). We will be running a blog tour for this so if there are any authors/readers who would like to have us invade for a day or say please let us know and we'll send you all the information! Otherwise watch this space for information about it all. And whilst you are waiting here is the sexy front cover.

It's Release Day!

So a while back one of my publishers House of Erotica had a call out for sexy winter stories. Now I love the season (although not as much as my partner does!) and had already been toying around with a story when the call came through.

Today The House of Erotica Winter Warmers Collection is officially released and it includes my story A Meeting of Seasons. It also includes a vast array of stories from other great authors and as always anthologies are an awesome way of discovering new writers.

So without further ado here is the gorgeous cover and links where you can buy the ebook from:

End of a week

Phew well its been a busy week but I've managed to do a lot of things and with the acceptance half way through the week it's been a good week.

Accountability is something I need to focus on. Very often I assume I've written more then I actually have so to solve this I've been setting daily goals this week and reporting upon them. This has made sure that I hit the goals and it means that my writing productivity has increased.  I have finished two short stories this week and am on the third chapter of a pirate story, as well as getting deep into another short story. On top of this I've signed and sent off a contract and written some proposals for my other job - phew!

Writing isn't a 9-5 job, which is great. I don't really want a 9-5 job I'm not sure I could cope with how regular it is. I seem to thrive more on unpredictability and spontaneity and as much as this brings far more stress it does mean that writing is the perfect job for me.

So whilst most people are about to enjoy two days off for the weekend I'll be busy working in my other job and fighting to hit my writing goals. *fingers crossed*

In the mean time whilst I'm busy why don't you all take time to check out my publishers blog with all the latest information, it has also recently had a bit of a make over and looks gorgeous just in time for winter!

And with the winter nights drawing in the best way to keep warm is to curl up by the fire with a great book so why don't you all check out The House of Erotica Summer Scorchers. This great ebook has my story Jungle Calls in it and every story is sizzling with heat!

Acceptance

Well this morning I got good news regarding a short story I submitted a while ago. It has been accepted but what its about and what it's been accepted in I can't yet say (but as soon as I can I will so watch this space!).

Hopefully this month will bring more good news as I have a lot of stories in various anthologies right now. As soon as I can give information on any of them I will do!

In other news I finished the short story I was working on yesterday and even got started on some proposals which I'm very pleased about. Now today's goal is to get to the 3000 mark on another short story and work on one more proposal.

Since I've been setting small daily goals for myself I've found that I've been able to focus on my writing - will I continue doing this? I'm not sure but we shall have to wait and see.

In the meantime don't forget to check out my icy winter story Cold Fire

Excerpt:

The trail ahead was dark. Now that she was in the forest, she could no longer see the ground in front of her. Stumbling, she fell, her foot catching on a tree root. Crying out in pain, Alice forced herself to get back up and continue to run. In the distance dogs barked, and she could hear the sounds of her pursuers breaking through the undergrowth.
Straining to breathe, Alice ran on, stumbling at almost every step. Moving through the forest was hard going, every movement causing sharp pains to shoot through her bare feet. Sweat dripped into her eyes, making them sting and her vision blur. Wiping it away didn’t help, yet she kept on running.

Alice had no idea how much time had passed as she ran, nor in which direction she was headed. It was a moment before she noticed that the forest in front of her was beginning to thin and grow lighter. Running towards the area, she felt the earth underfoot quickly become wet and soft, then grow hard and bitterly cold. She began to lose all feeling in her feet as they pounded against soil that steadily became frozen the further she ran. The dogs sounded closer and she heard the men shouting. Turning, she caught a glimpse of their torches before her foot caught on an unseen obstacle, twisting underneath her. She hit the forest floor hard. Pain shot through her foot and up her leg, as she clawed at the remains of the fallen leaves, writhing in the cold. She rolled over to face the men as their shadowy forms moved through the trees towards her.

Busy busy busy

Well as usual I have been crazily busy but don't think I'm not writing!

In the next coming weeks I have an anthology coming out called Sun, Sea & Seduction. It's my second all female anthology and one I'm definitely looking forward to seeing out there. I will give you all more information about it once it's out!

In the meantime I'm working on a number of short stories for various anthologies and story submission calls I've been sent. At the same time as that I'm working on a longer story based around pirates, this is a new avenue for me as it's requiring a lot of research. Of course the trouble with research is that I have a tendency to find lots of other interesting pieces of information which spark off more ideas. So expect a glut of pirate stories from me next year!

With it suddenly becoming November (I'm really not totally sure where October went) we are moving closer to Christmas and winter, so don't forget to check out my frosty story Cold Fire.

In his ice palace Kevalan spends his time visiting different planes bringing cold and ice at certain times of the year. On a brief visit to one he rescues a young woman. He carries her to his palace for her safety all the while worried about his feelings for her. He only has one night on this world is it enough to form a strong enough bond, and why does she look upon him so fearfully?

And they arrived!

As I posted yesterday both Smut Alfresco and Smut for Chocoholics are now in print. This morning I woke up to the knocking of the postman who turned up to deliver them both!

No matter how many times it happens actually having a book in your hands that you contributed to is one of the best feelings in the world and for me it always feels a bit like christmas!

My story in Smut Alfresco is When the Rains Come which I am very proud of, it's a story I had planned out many years ago but only finished it when Smut Alfresco submission call was announced.

In Smut for Chocoholics (I just love the colour - purple is one of my favourite colours however so that may explain it a little!)  my story is The Chocolatier, which I knew I just had to write when thinking about molten chocolate and complete indulgence.

Now onto other news

In the next few weeks my latest all female anthology will be out and once it is out I'll be running a competition in which you can win any one of my ebooks or even a print copy of any of the books I'm part of that are in print.

So watch this space!

I'd like to share with you all the gorgeous new covers for two anthologies that have some of my stories in.

The first has in it my story When The Rains Come. It has some really interesting stories in it and I'm happy and proud to be a part of it. So here is the brand new cover!

The second new cover is for an anthology that is all about one of my favourite kinds of food - chocolate. My story is called The Chocolatier. It has some really yummy stories in it and there is plenty of chocolate within!
